This gilt Chinese export jewelry box is in excellent condition and decorated in delicate gilt and black lacquer. This example dates to the early 19th century. It is made in the typical form with brass swan neck handles which are classic English Regency style. The detailed gilt black lacquer work was made using the maki-e technique and required a high level of technical skill.
This intricate and detailed style of chinoiserie work was made in Canton for export to the wealthy members of the British Georgian & American upper class in the Qing dynasty when Chinoiserie was all the rage. Black lacquer export sewing kits and games boxes were also made.
These pieces are fragile pieces of history and are usually found damaged especially the tops, however, the condition of this piece is outstanding. This sewing box has been checked over in our workshop and small restorations made to stop the aging process.
